What are common causes of car scratches?

As soon as you notice that your vehicle has been scratched, you'll want to be proactive about getting to the shop to have the damage repaired. If you delay, then you could give rust the opportunity to set in. At The Paint Spot Body Shop, our experienced technicians are experts at repairing all types of cosmetic damage, including scratches. By familiarizing yourself with some of the common sources of vehicle scratches, you'll be more likely to prevent scratches from occurring.

Common Sources of Car Scratches

Car scratches often occur during the washing/waxing process. To make sure you don't accidentally scratch your car's paint, you should only use non-abrasive washing materials. Synthetic microfiber washing mitts are an excellent option because they're designed for just this type of task and won't cause scratching. Prior to commencing the waxing process, it's best to check closely to be sure there isn't any debris on the vehicle's surface that could get dragged along and potentially cause scratches. And if you want to absolutely minimize the risk of your car getting scratched, then you may want to skip automatic car washes. It's possible for the brushes in automatic car washes to accumulate debris that doesn't fully rinse away between vehicles. Then the next car that goes through could get scratched by that debris as the brushes rub against the car's body.

When out and about, it's best to avoid parking in tight spots. If you're squeezed in between two other vehicles, there's a better chance of someone carelessly swinging their door open into the side of your vehicle, potentially causing scratches and/or a dent. By parking toward the back of the lot where it's typically less crowded, there's less risk of such damage. And if you happen to see an acquaintance while out running errands, it's best not to lean against your car while you chat. If you're leaning against your car while wearing sharp-edged apparel, such as a studded belt, you could scratch your paint when shifting your weight.

Malicious behavior is another common source of scratches. When a car gets "keyed," it often results in long, deep scratches that are more difficult to repair. Parking in a garage or under video surveillance can reduce this risk.
